History: The first signs of human existence can be traced back 300.000 years.
The first written chronics about the town are from the Roman historian Plutarch.
During the Roman Empire Salmantica, as it was called by the Romans, acquires a special strategic interest because the “Silver Route” (Vía de la Plata) runs through it. This route communicated North with South in the western part of the peninsula; the oldest construction remaining from this era is the Roman Bridge (1st century A.C.)
After the Muslim occupation in the year 712 and the following Christian-Muslim wars, the town was finally repopulated towards the end of the 11th century by the king of León, Alfonso VI.
From this epoch we can still see the urban structure of the old quarter, the Old Cathedral, remains of the defensive ramparts, and a series of Romanic churches all over the town. |
