"La mirada se encuentra con ventanillas góticas o barrocas; frisos de encajes platerescos, escudos, medallones. Ninguna nota ajena a la antigüedad interviene en el conjunto y, de pronto, uno comienza a sentir que todos estos objetos no tienen existencia individual, sino que forman parte de un ser que posee cuerpo y alma y que se llama Salamanca."
Alejandro Rognedov
Ukrainian, theater promoter (first half of the 2oth century)
The golden epoch of Salamanca was towards the end of the 15th century and in the 16th century. During these years some of the most representative buildings of the town were built:

The New Cathedral: Without any doubt, the most magnificent building. It shares dignity with the Old Romanic Cathedral, and Salamanca is one of the few capitals that count with the privilege of having two cathedrals.

San Esteban: Dominique convent founded by the Cardinal Fernando de Toledo. The walls of this convent enclose the memories of the visit of Christopher Colon in the year 1484, just before he set out on his first journey to America. The convent has a big Plateresque façade.

House of the Shells: This is the most representative civil building of the style during the era of King Fernando and Queen Isabel (los Reyes Católicos). The style is a mixture of Gothic, Moorish and Italian styles. 350 pilgrim shells, symbol of the Order of Santiago, decorate the building.

The Plaza Mayor: This is the neuralgic center of the life in Salamanca, created by the architects A. Churriguera and A. García Quiñones as space for festive celebrations, commerce and cultural and political manifestations. It is considered one of the most beautiful plazas in the world.

Convent of Las Dueñas: It has a beautiful Renaissance cloister. “From the cloister of the convent the sky acquires a different dimension”.

Torre del Clavero: This tower is of gothic style and dates back to the 15th century when these remains were part of a nobleman’s palace.

Huerto de Calixto y Melibea: It is in this garden that the story of La Celestina is supposed to have taken place.

Casa Lis: Modernist mansion which now houses the museum of "Art Deco".

La University:
Façade of the University: Situated in the Patio de las Escuelas Mayores, with a medallion of Los Reyes Católicos in the middle of the Plateresque façade.
Cloister of Escuelas Menoress: An example of Renaissance.
University Library: It houses valuable manuscripts and incunabulas as well as facsimiles of the book El libro del Buen Amor and the Introductione Latinae.
Lecture hall of Fray Luis De León and Miguel de Unamuno.
